Las Margaritas sits in the highlands of eastern Chiapas, not far from Comitán, on land that falls gradually toward the forested lowlands further east. The town follows the classic Mexican pattern: a central plaza with a church and a grid of blocks spreading outward from it. From above, the grid bends a little where the ground rises and falls.
The municipality is at the heart of the Tojolabal Maya region, and many surrounding communities are Tojolabal. Las Margaritas has long been a gateway town, connecting the highlands with the more remote areas that stretch toward the Lacandon forest. It also gained wider attention in 1994 as one of the towns involved in the Zapatista uprising.

Roads to the east
Routes leave town toward the lowlands and the Lacandon region. On the map they stretch outward as long, thin lines through a landscape with few other roads.
