From above, Leicester shows a tight knot of old streets around the Clock Tower. An inner ring road loops around it, and radial roads fan out toward the county. On the western side the River Soar and the Grand Union Canal run beside each other, splitting and rejoining. Between them they form a thin green and blue seam that separates the centre from the western suburbs.
The city goes back to Roman Ratae, and traces of that grid still sit near the Jewry Wall. In 2012 archaeologists found the remains of Richard III under a council car park close to the cathedral. The site is now a visitor centre, set among the same lanes that appear on the map as a dense cluster of short, angled blocks.
A Leicester map poster also shows how the city loosens toward its edges. Terraced streets give way to Victoria Park and the university campuses to the south-east. Along Belgrave Road to the north, the long straight line of the Golden Mile runs out of the centre. Each area has its own pattern, and at poster scale they fit together like neighbouring fabrics.

Inner ring road
A continuous loop of dual carriageway surrounds the historic centre. It gives the poster a clear frame, with the older, finer street pattern held inside it.
Victoria Park
A large open lawn south-east of the centre, sitting between the two universities. It is one of the few wide blank spaces in an otherwise closely built street plan.
