Lemay is an unincorporated community just south of the St. Louis city limits, on bluffs above the Mississippi River. The river forms its eastern edge, and the River Des Peres marks its northern boundary with the city. Between them lies a dense grid of residential streets that slowly shifts direction to follow the terrain.
The neighborhoods are mostly modest single-family homes from the first half of the twentieth century and the postwar years, set on small lots. From above, the result is a fine, busy pattern of short blocks. A Lemay map poster renders that texture against the broad, smooth shape of the river.
To the south lies Jefferson Barracks, a historic military post with a large national cemetery and open parkland. Its wide green spaces and curving roads balance the density of Lemay's residential streets on a larger print.
