Leutkirch im Allgäu lies in the south of Baden-Württemberg, in rolling countryside between Lake Constance and the Alps. From above, the town is a compact medieval core with a long central square and short, winding lanes, ringed by later districts and then open fields. Leutkirch was a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire, answerable only to the emperor, and its old town retains the layout and many buildings from that era.
