From above, Liaocheng is organised around water. At its centre a compact, nearly square old town sits on its own island inside Dongchang Lake, one of the larger urban lakes in northern China. The shoreline wraps the old quarter like a frame, and the newer city spreads out from it in wide, regular blocks across the flat plain of western Shandong.
The Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal runs through the city, and for centuries Liaocheng was a trading stop on that route. On the map the canal is a narrow, deliberate line that is easy to tell apart from the looser curves of the lake. Taken together, the canal and the lake explain the city's old nickname, the water city north of the Yangtze.

The Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal crosses the city as a thin, straight channel, a reminder that Liaocheng grew as a stop for boats carrying grain and goods between north and south.
