Libertyville lies in Lake County, Illinois, north of Chicago, with the Des Plaines River running along its eastern side through a wide band of forest preserves. The village grew along Milwaukee Avenue, which still forms its main street, and on a map the older grid around downtown gives way to curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs further out.
