Lillehammer stands at the northern end of Lake Mjøsa, Norway's largest lake, where the Gudbrandsdalen valley opens toward the water. It hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics, and the ski jumps at Lysgårdsbakken still overlook the town from the hillside above the centre.
The map shows a town built on a slope. The centre sits on lower ground near the lake, with Storgata, the pedestrian main street, running parallel to the shore. Above it the streets zigzag uphill in terraces, and the Mesnaelva river cuts a narrow course down through the town toward Mjøsa.

Storgata and the centre
The old centre lies in a neat grid on the lower slope, with the pedestrian Storgata running along it parallel to the lake.

Above the town, roads switch back up toward Lysgårdsbakken, the ski jumps built for the 1994 Winter Olympics, and the Olympic park around them.
