Liptovský Mikuláš sits in the Liptov basin, a wide valley in northern Slovakia where the Váh river runs east to west. On a map the town appears as a dense core around its central square. Housing estates and industrial blocks spread out around it, and the river and the railway run side by side through the valley floor. The flat ground of the basin gives the street plan an open, loose feel.
West of the town the Váh widens into Liptovská Mara, a large reservoir whose irregular shoreline takes up a big part of the frame. To the south, the Low Tatras rise toward the Demänovská valley, known for its limestone caves and the Jasná ski area. To the north the Western Tatras begin. The town is also remembered as the place where the outlaw Juraj Jánošík was tried and executed in 1713.

The Váh corridor
The river, the railway and the main roads share the valley floor, forming parallel lines that cut through the town from east to west.
Road to Demänovská
A route leads south out of town into the Demänovská valley, toward its caves and the ski slopes of Jasná in the Low Tatras.
