Lirang lies in the hilly country of the Chongqing municipality, on the eastern side of the Sichuan Basin. This is a landscape of rounded ridges and folded valleys, with little level ground, and the map reflects this. Roads curve constantly, following the contours rather than cutting straight across.
The town's built area is modest and gathered where routes meet, while the surrounding land is intensively farmed. Terraced fields and scattered hamlets fill the slopes, connected by a fine net of lanes. From above, the result is a dense, rhythmic pattern of small curving lines covering the hills.
