Lisburn sits on the River Lagan, which forms a soft, winding line along the southern side of the centre. The older streets gather around the market square and the cathedral. Beyond them, suburbs spread outward, along with roads toward Belfast, which lies a short distance to the north-east, and the M1 motorway, which runs to the south of the centre.
