Lishui sits in south-western Zhejiang, in a valley surrounded by forested mountains. On a map the city stretches along the upper Ou River and its tributaries, with the urban area squeezed into the flat land between water and hills. Streets bend with the river, bridges cross it at intervals, and the built-up area thins quickly where the slopes begin.
The prefecture is one of the most mountainous and forested parts of Zhejiang and is often promoted for its natural environment. It is also known for two old crafts from Longquan, a city within Lishui prefecture: celadon porcelain and traditional sword-making, both with histories reaching back many centuries.
