Littlehampton sits on the West Sussex coast at the mouth of the River Arun, and the river shapes the whole map. It runs south in a firm channel between quays and boatyards, then passes between harbour walls into the English Channel. The town spreads east of the river in a grid of terraced streets. Across the water, the land stays open.
That western side holds West Beach, a stretch of sand and protected dunes reached by a footbridge from the town. To the east, the seafront has a long promenade and a green, and it is home to the Long Bench, billed as one of the longest benches in Britain. Nearby is the East Beach Café, a sculptural building by Thomas Heatherwick.
