Littleton lies just south of Denver, on the high plains where the land begins to rise toward the Rocky Mountains. The South Platte River runs along the western side of the city in a green corridor of trails, parks and ponds. The downtown sits east of the river on a small historic grid around Main Street and the rail line.
Littleton began in the nineteenth century as a farming and milling settlement, and it kept its compact original core as the Denver suburbs grew around it. Main Street, with its older brick buildings, is still the centre of town. Beyond it the map turns into a mix of straight arterials and curving subdivisions, and light rail lines run north toward Denver.
