Liufeng lies in southeastern Gansu, a region where the loess plateau breaks into valleys, ridges and terraced slopes. On a map a place like this is shaped less by planning than by relief: the town follows the flatter ground along the valley, and the hills around it push the built-up area into a long, narrow form.
