Lohārdagā is the headquarters of the district of the same name in Jharkhand, on the Chota Nagpur plateau west of Ranchi. The terrain is gently rolling, with low hills, patches of forest and fields in between. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets, with roads leading out toward Ranchi, Gumla and the surrounding villages.
The district is known for its bauxite deposits, which are mined in the hills and carried away by rail and road to make aluminium. The railway that reaches the town from Ranchi reflects this role and adds a distinct line to the map.
