Loralai is the headquarters of Loralai District in north-eastern Balochistan, Pakistan. It stands at considerable altitude in a broad valley, surrounded by mountains that are dry and largely treeless. On a map the town appears as a defined cluster of streets on the valley floor, with ridgelines closing the view in several directions.
Its layout reflects two histories. The older bazaar area has a dense, irregular pattern. The cantonment, established under British rule and still an important military station, is laid out with wider roads and more open spacing. The difference in grain between them is easy to read even at a small scale.
Orchards and fields fed by streams and wells form a green margin around parts of the town, then quickly give way to open hillside.
