Maardu lies just east of Tallinn on Estonia's north coast, facing Muuga Bay. From above, the town has a distinctive split. Compact districts of mid-century apartment blocks sit in one area, while large harbour basins, piers and industrial land spread along the shore at Muuga, one of the country's major cargo ports. Lake Maardu lies inland, among forest and fields.
The town grew in the Soviet period around industry, including phosphorite mining and processing, and its apartment districts still reflect that planned growth. Beyond them lie older features, such as the manor of Maardu near the lake. Today the port is the main source of activity, handling bulk and container traffic for the Tallinn area and beyond.
