Macaúbas is a municipality in the interior of Bahia, in northeastern Brazil, far from the Atlantic coast. The town sits in semi-arid country with hills around it, and on a map it looks like many sertão towns: a regular grid of streets around a central square and church, surrounded by open land.
Beyond the town, roads and dirt tracks branch out toward farms and smaller settlements, often following valleys between the high ground. Seasonal streams leave faint lines across the terrain, and in the dry months many of them carry little water.
