Madalena is a municipality in the interior of Ceará, in north-eastern Brazil, in the semi-arid sertão. The town itself is small, and from above it appears as a modest grid of streets around a central area, with the built-up edge giving way quickly to open land. Beyond it, the map is mostly empty space, crossed by a few roads and many unpaved tracks.
The surrounding landscape is the dry caatinga typical of inland Ceará, where water shapes settlement.
