Makkah lies in a dry, rocky landscape in western Saudi Arabia, a short drive inland from the Red Sea port of Jeddah. The city fills a network of narrow valleys between steep hills, so its districts take on long, branching shapes rather than a compact circle. Streets follow the valley floors, and where hills block the way, road tunnels carry traffic straight through.
At the centre is the Masjid al-Haram, the Grand Mosque surrounding the Kaaba, the holiest site in Islam and the focus of the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
