Manaquiri sits in the Amazon lowlands south of the Solimões, not far from Manaus as the crow flies but in a completely different landscape. On a map the town is a small cluster of streets surrounded mainly by water: lakes, winding channels and seasonally flooded forest. Water, more than roads, is what connects this place to the rest of the region.
The town’s shape depends on the river’s annual rhythm. When the water rises, lakes and channels expand into the forest, and when it falls, beaches and mudbanks appear.
