Manlleu lies in the Osona district of Catalonia, north of Vic, on a bend of the River Ter. The river dominates the map. It curves around the town, and its banks are lined with the mill buildings and water channels that powered local industry. The historic centre sits just above the river, with a tight network of streets around the main square.
Like many towns along the Ter, Manlleu grew through the textile industry in the nineteenth century. Its factories used canals that took water from the river.
