Maracay lies in the Aragua valley in north-central Venezuela, between the coastal range to the north and the plain leading to Lake Valencia to the southwest. The land is fairly flat, so the city spreads in a wide grid of blocks. To the north, the streets stop at the mountains, which are part of Henri Pittier National Park, the oldest national park in the country.
Maracay is known as the Garden City for its parks and tree-lined avenues. Much of its early twentieth-century development took place when Juan Vicente Gómez made it his base, and it is also considered the birthplace of Venezuelan aviation. The large Plaza Bolívar and the old airfield area are key features of the centre.
