Mariakerke was a separate municipality until it merged into Ghent in 1977. Today it forms the city's northwestern edge. On a map it sits between the dense historic core of Ghent and the flatter, greener land of East Flanders, with the waterways around the city running close by.
Its structure is typical of a Flemish suburb that grew around an older village. A few long roads lead out of Ghent, and residential streets fill the land between them, some curving and some planned in neat loops. Parks, sports fields and patches of woodland leave open spaces between the housing.
