Mārupe is a suburban municipality just southwest of Riga. It grew quickly after Latvian independence, as families moved from city flats to houses with gardens. From above it is a mix of new residential streets, older farm roads and patches of pine forest and meadow, with a loose, open texture very different from Riga's dense centre.
The most striking feature on the map is Riga International Airport, which sits at the municipality's edge. Its long runway and taxiways form a clean set of straight lines. Around them, the residential areas follow a gentler pattern of curving roads and small blocks.
