Masjed Soleymān lies in the foothills of the Zagros in Khuzestan, not far from the Karun River. The town does not form one tight grid. Instead, its neighbourhoods are scattered across ridges and valleys, joined by winding roads that follow the terrain, with open ground in between. On a map it looks like a set of separate islands.
In 1908 oil was struck here for the first time in the Middle East, and the town grew as a company settlement around the fields and installations. Several of its districts still reflect that planned, company-built origin. Hydroelectric dams on the Karun nearby have also transformed the river valley.
