Massarosa lies in the province of Lucca, between the Tuscan hills and the coastal plain of Versilia. Its map is made of distinct zones. There are wooded slopes and hill villages to the north and east, a flat plain of reclaimed land crossed by straight drainage channels, and Lake Massaciuccoli with its reed marshes to the south. The main town sits where the hills meet the plain.
Lake Massaciuccoli is one of the last surviving coastal wetlands in Tuscany and is now protected as part of a regional park. Giacomo Puccini lived and composed at Torre del Lago on its far shore. On the Massarosa side, the remains of a Roman villa and baths look out over the water.

Drainage grid
The reclaimed plain is crossed by long, straight channels and field roads. On the map they create a precise, ruled pattern between the hills and the lake.

On the slopes above the plain, small villages connect by winding roads. They add curved lines and scattered clusters of streets to the upper part of the map.
