Mattapan lies in the southern part of Boston, where the city meets Milton across the Neponset River. On the map, the river forms its southern border, and Blue Hill Avenue runs through the neighbourhood as its main spine. Around it, streets of houses and triple-deckers fill the gentle hills in an irregular grid.
Mattapan Square is the commercial centre, where several major roads meet near the river. The neighbourhood is known for the Mattapan trolley line, which still runs vintage streetcars along a leafy route to Ashmont.
