Mawlaik lies on the Chindwin River in the Sagaing Region of Myanmar. The river is the main feature of the map: the town stretches along its bank, with streets running parallel to the water and short lanes leading down to it. Behind the town, the land rises into wooded hills.
The Chindwin is one of Myanmar's major rivers and has long served as a route for travel and trade through the northwest of the country. Mawlaik grew as a river town and served as an administrative centre during the colonial period. Much of the surrounding land is forested and sparsely settled.
