Mehkar is a town in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra, on the rolling Deccan plateau in the Vidarbha region. Its street plan is typical of an older market town: a dense, irregular core of narrow lanes, from which main roads spread out towards neighbouring towns and villages across the surrounding farmland.
The land around Mehkar is largely agricultural, with the dark soils of the Deccan supporting crops such as cotton and soybean.
