Merelbeke lies directly south of Ghent, on both sides of the Upper Scheldt. From above, it is a mix of suburban streets, old village centres and open land. The river draws broad, looping bends through the municipality, and railway lines and main roads fan out from Ghent to cross it at several points.
The Merelbeke map poster is shaped by water and rail. The Scheldt's meanders, some of them cut off and left as quiet oxbows, contrast with the straight tracks and embankments of the railway. Ghent's ring canal and motorway system lies close to the northern edge, and residential districts fill the spaces in between.
The municipality includes several former villages that have grown together over time. Their older centres still appear on the map as small knots of streets.
