Miaojie is a town in western Yunnan, south of the Dali area, in a landscape of mountain ridges and flat valley basins. From above, the town sits on level ground at the bottom of a valley. A cluster of streets forms the centre, surrounded by a patchwork of fields, and the terrain rises steeply beyond them.
The region around it is home to several ethnic communities, including Yi and Hui peoples, and much of the land is given to farming. As with many towns in the Yunnan uplands, roads follow the valleys and wind over the passes between them, linking the town to the county seat and neighbouring settlements.
