Miranda lies in the north of the Cauca Department in Colombia, where the flat valley of the Cauca river meets the first slopes of the Central Cordillera. On the map, the town forms a compact grid of streets around a central plaza, with the valley floor spreading out to the west and the terrain rising to the east.
The valley around Miranda is one of the main sugarcane-growing areas of Colombia, and large fields of cane surround the town on the lower ground. Toward the mountains, the landscape becomes steeper and more broken, with smaller farms and winding rural roads.
