Mölndal lies immediately south of Gothenburg, in a valley shaped by the Mölndalsån river. The river, the railway and the E6 motorway all run through the same corridor, and on a map they form parallel lines through the town's centre, with residential neighbourhoods rising on the hills on either side.
The town grew around the river's rapids, where water powered mills for centuries. The old mill district, Mölndals Kvarnby, still sits beside the falls. On the town's edge is Gunnebo House, an eighteenth-century estate with formal gardens, one of the best-preserved country houses of its era in Sweden.
