Momil lies in the Córdoba department of northern Colombia, in the flat lowlands of the lower Sinú River. The town sits close to the Ciénaga Grande de Lorica, a large wetland system of lagoons, marshes and seasonal waters, and from above the land around it is a mix of pasture, farmland and watery shapes.
The name is well known to archaeologists. Excavations near the town in the mid-twentieth century uncovered pottery and other remains from a pre-Columbian culture now called Momil, which has become an important reference point in the study of early settlement along the Caribbean coast of Colombia.

Momil gave its name to a pre-Columbian culture identified through excavations near the town, making it a familiar name in Colombian archaeology.
