From above, Mooresville reads as two landscapes meeting. The older town is a compact grid set along the rail line, with short blocks and a clear main street. West and south of it, the drawing changes completely as roads bend around the drowned creek valleys of Lake Norman, and cul-de-sacs spread out like branches toward the water.
Lake Norman is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina, and its shoreline gives the map most of its character. Rail-line downtown
The historic centre grew along the railway in a tight rectangular grid. It is the densest and most regular part of the map, a small block of order in the middle of a looser pattern.
