Mount Vernon is the county seat of Skagit County in north-western Washington. The city lies along the Skagit River, which curves past downtown on its way to Puget Sound. Interstate 5 runs through the city, and hills rise on its eastern side.
The flat, fertile farmland of the Skagit Valley surrounds the city, and every spring the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival draws large numbers of visitors to see the fields in bloom. Downtown faces the river, protected by a floodwall built in recent years.
