Much lies in the Rhein-Sieg district of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the hilly country of the Bergisches Land east of Cologne. The municipality is not one compact town but a central village surrounded by many small hamlets, and on a map they appear as scattered dots of buildings across a green landscape.
The hills are divided by valleys with small streams, and the roads follow them in curves, climbing between villages and then descending again. Woods and meadows take up most of the surface, so the built-up areas look like small islands.
