Muktsar, officially Sri Muktsar Sahib, is in the Malwa region of Punjab, on flat farmland crossed by irrigation canals. The town takes its name from the Battle of Muktsar in 1705, one of the defining events in Sikh history, and it remains an important pilgrimage destination.
At the heart of the town stands Gurdwara Tuti Gandhi Sahib with its large sacred water tank. On a map the tank appears as a clear rectangular shape in the dense centre, surrounded by narrow lanes and bazaars. Beyond the old core, newer neighbourhoods follow straighter, more regular roads that lead out into the fields.
