Mwanza is Tanzania's second-largest city and its main port on Lake Victoria. It sits where the lake's southern shore breaks into bays, gulfs and peninsulas, so the shoreline on a map is long and irregular. Rocky hills rise directly behind the waterfront, and neighbourhoods climb their slopes in dense patterns that follow the contours rather than a grid.
The best-known symbol of the city is Bismarck Rock, a stack of balanced granite boulders standing in the water just off the shore. The lake fills a large part of the frame, which makes the composition unusually open.
