Mymensingh lies on the southern bank of the Old Brahmaputra River in north-central Bangladesh, and the river is the dominant line on its map. The town extends along the bank in a dense pattern of streets and lanes, with the railway running through and ponds scattered among the blocks. Across the water, sandbars and flat farmland stretch away to the north.
The town is the seat of Mymensingh Division, created in 2015, and a long-standing educational centre. Bangladesh Agricultural University occupies a large campus by the river, and the city also has a medical college and other institutions. Shashi Lodge, built by the zamindars of Muktagachha, is one of its best-known historic buildings.
