Nadvirna lies in the Ivano-Frankivsk region of western Ukraine, at the point where the lowland of Prykarpattia begins to rise toward the Carpathian mountains. On a map the Bystrytsia river runs through the area in braided channels, with gravel banks and islands, and the town spreads along it, its streets fanning out across the flatter ground before the slopes begin.
The town is an old settlement that grew into a regional centre, and it is known for its oil refinery, one of the older industrial sites in the region.
