Nesttun lies south of central Bergen in the Fana area, where several valleys meet. On a map it is a crossroads. Roads come in from the city, from the south and from the eastern valleys, and they all meet in a small centre set in the low ground between wooded hills. A small lake, Nesttunvatnet, sits close to the centre.
For a long time Nesttun was a local hub, first at the end of the old narrow-gauge railway toward Os and later on the main road south. Today the Bybanen light rail runs through it, a smooth curving line added to the older, more tangled road pattern. Housing climbs the slopes around the centre in contour-following loops, as it does across much of Bergen.
