Neustrelitz, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, was founded in the 18th century as a planned residence town for the dukes of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Its plan is unusually clear. At the centre is a square market place, and eight streets radiate from it like the points of a star. From above, the design is instantly recognisable.
The palace itself did not survive the Second World War, but the palace gardens remain, stretching toward the Zierker See, a lake on the western edge of town. A Neustrelitz map poster shows the formal park, the water and the radiating streets together, much as the planners intended.
The town lies in the Mecklenburg Lake District, a landscape of forests and many lakes, with the Müritz National Park close by. Beyond the baroque core, later neighbourhoods and the railway surround the star plan. In black and white, the geometry of the centre stands out with rare clarity.

The former palace grounds extend toward the lake with paths and open green space. They show the formal side of the town's design.

A lake lies on the western edge of town and gives the map a broad area of water that balances the dense grid of streets.
