New London sits on the west bank of the Thames River where it opens into Long Island Sound. Its downtown is a compact grid rising from the waterfront, and the city's shape is set by the water on two sides: the river to the east and the Sound to the south, with Fort Trumbull on a point by the harbour.
In the nineteenth century New London was one of the leading whaling ports in the United States, and its maritime identity remains strong.
