Newberg sits in Yamhill County, Oregon, on the north bank of the Willamette River at the edge of the Chehalem Valley. On a map a regular grid of streets fills the flat ground between the river and the hills. Highway 99W runs through town as a main line, splitting into a one-way pair through the centre.
Quakers shaped the town's early history, and George Fox University still occupies a campus near downtown. Herbert Hoover spent part of his boyhood here with his uncle, and the Hoover–Minthorn House is preserved as a museum. The hills north of town are covered with vineyards that are central to the Willamette Valley wine region.
