Nirgua lies in the uplands of Yaracuy state in north-central Venezuela, in a valley surrounded by forested hills. From above, the town has a compact Spanish-style grid at its centre, and the roads that leave it quickly begin to curve and climb as they follow the terrain.
Like many towns in the region, Nirgua was founded in the colonial period and is organised around a central plaza and church. Its higher setting gives it a milder climate than the lowlands, and the surrounding countryside is agricultural, with fields and farms scattered across the slopes.

Winding mountain roads
Roads leaving the town bend and loop to follow the surrounding hills. Their curves create flowing lines that contrast with the straight streets in the centre.
