Nizhyn lies in Chernihiv Oblast in northern Ukraine, on the Oster river. On a map, the river loops through the town in tight bends, and the historic centre sits close to it. From there, roads fan out across the flat, open landscape, and the railway passes to one side, adding a long straight line to the composition.
The town has a long history as a trading centre and is well known for two things. Nikolai Gogol studied at the Nizhyn Gymnasium of Higher Sciences, the institution that later became the town's university. And across the region, Nizhyn cucumbers, pickled in a traditional style, have given the name wide recognition.
