Nnewi spreads across gently rolling land in the south of Anambra State, south-east of Onitsha. Rather than a single centre, the map shows a web of roads linking closely built compounds, markets and workshops, with the town traditionally made up of four quarters: Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim and Nnewichi. The density is high but irregular, following old paths more than any imposed grid.
The town is known across Nigeria as a centre of trade and manufacturing, particularly for motor spare parts, and its markets connect it to buyers far beyond the state.
