Norman lies just south of Oklahoma City and shows the American land-survey grid very clearly: long straight roads a mile apart divide the land into square sections. The Canadian River curves along the western side of the city. To the east, the irregular shoreline of Lake Thunderbird breaks the pattern and gives the map its one large natural shape.
The city was founded in the Land Run of 1889 and took its name from Abner Norman, a surveyor who had worked in the area before settlement. It is best known as the home of the University of Oklahoma, whose campus lies south of downtown and shapes much of the city's life, from game days at the stadium to the shops of Campus Corner.
A Norman map poster shows the old railroad town around Main Street, the large planned campus with its ovals and quads, and the grid of neighbourhoods reaching toward the lake. Straight lines run almost everywhere, broken only by the river to the west and the water to the east, and that contrast gives the design its strength.

Mile-section grid
Major roads run straight north to south and east to west at one-mile intervals. This pattern comes from the original land survey and organises almost the entire city.
Lake Thunderbird
East of the city, the reservoir spreads across the prairie with a branching, irregular shoreline. It is the one large natural shape in an otherwise rectilinear landscape.
